What is a Dental Bridge?
Essentially, a dental bridge is a series of dental crowns. A dental bridge may be used to replace one or more missing teeth and can either be removable or fixed.
Types of Dental Bridges
Removable Dental Bridge – Generally, a removable dental bridge (also known as a temporary removable partial denture) is only suitable as a short term solution. A removable bridge can help to maintain tooth position while a patient is preparing to have a fixed dental bridge or dental implant. While the cost of a removable dental bridge is appealing, they do not offer long term benefits.
- Fixed Dental Bridge – In this type of restoration, a prosthetic tooth is connected to two dental crowns which cover the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Another option is to have a fixed dental bridge secured by dental implants instead of dental crowns. Dental implants are self supporting, eliminating the need to degrade neighboring teeth as is the case with a traditional bridge supported by dental crowns.
Dental Bridge vs. Dental Implant
There are many things to consider when comparing dental bridges vs. dental implants. A dental implant replaces the tooth root, so it offers a better long term solution. However, not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. Depending on the location of the missing tooth or the bone structure, Dr. Mahnke may recommend a dental bridge or partial denture to replace your missing teeth.
